Protect your pet. ShelterCare Pet Insurance Programs

The AWC is a nonprofit created in 2008 by local citizens compelled to address the cruelty and neglect of cats and dogs in and around Las Vegas, New Mexico. We are volunteers who gained our community’s trust by helping folks with pet food, providing low-cost spay and neuter services, and rescuing, rehabilitating, and finding forever homes for the sick, the injured, and the forgotten. As a result of the AWC’s good work, the City of Las Vegas invited us to take over operation of the city animal shelter. The city funds us at the same level they have spent running it themselves, but we plan to make the shelter much more than the city was able to achieve.

The AWC has raised the level of care routinely given to each animal that enters the shelter. Vaccinating every animal upon intake and requiring sterilization for every animal that is adopted are at the core of what we consider to be basic care. (The low budget prevented the city-run shelter from meeting such basic and essential promises.) We staff the shelter with passionate, dedicated, experienced members from our rescue teams who have been doing this work as volunteers for years. We  also add a knowledgeable group of volunteers to provide socialization and one-on-one care for the animals, in order to greatly reduce the depression and stress of being a shelter animal. Happier animals are more adoptable animals, which translates into fewer abandoned strays and a greatly reduced euthanasia rate.

Better animals, more educated caregivers, and a more humane perspective make for a better community. While we provide the services we have built our reputation on, we would also offer pet guardians the resources for humanely maintaining a companion animal in one home for its lifetime. This is life-changing for our animals and also for the families they become a part of.

This step forward for companion animals is a leap forward for the entire community.  The Animal Welfare Coalition can be reached at 505-652-4366.
